Yue Zhao
Personal Profile:

Yue Zhao received her PhD in Basic Medicine from Fudan University in 2015, where she trained in Professor Qiqun Tang’s laboratory. She subsequently joined Nanjing University Medical School and is now a principal investigator in the Department of Immunology. Her research focuses on how gut bacteria and fungi influence metabolic disease and therapeutic response through microbial enzymes, bioactive metabolites, immune regulation, and inter-organ communication. Her recent work identified a gut microbial enzyme that degrades metformin and limits its therapeutic efficacy in type 2 diabetes, and uncovered a protective gut fungal metabolite pathway in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. By integrating clinical cohorts, multi-omics, microbial genetics, enzymology, structural biology, and disease models, her group aims to develop microbiome-informed precision therapies for metabolic diseases. Her work has been published in leading journals, including Cell Metabolism, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, Clinical and Translational Medicine, and Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
